In the 1970s, Black and minority ethnic communities in Bath — facing discrimination and low expectations in mainstream schools — took matters into their own hands.
They created their own Saturday schools, run by parents and volunteers, offering academic support alongside Black history, culture and identity. BFESG grew out of that movement.
Fifty years on, those stories deserve to be told. This project works with community elders and University of West of England students to gather, shape and share the oral histories of supplementary schooling in Bath and Bristol — before they're lost.
